In Colorado, during a routine "Click it or Ticket" seatbelt enforcement check, one woman felt it was more important to strap a gas can in a car seat while her toddler was only buckled with a seat belt next to it. The woman told police that her child unbuckled himself a lot. The officer then asked her if he unbuckles himself, grabs a gas can, straps the can in the car seat, then buckles himself in the seat next to it and she, of course, had no answer. Needless to say, she was cited for seat belt violations, car seat violations, and other traffic offenses.
Wow. Way to put your child in danger.
The officer who stopped her took a picture of what he saw and the kid looks maybe three-years-old at the most and was only wearing a diaper (click on the link to see the picture). What on earth could she had been thinking when she did this?
"I don't want the gas can to spill so I'll just put it in Junior's car seat and he'll be fine with just a seat belt on." There are laws for kids to be properly restrained in vehicles for a reason. She obviously missed that parenting lesson.
The weird thing is that she was only cited! Isn't that child endangerment? I mean don't get me wrong, our parents used to let us sit on their laps while they drove, but that was before the governments and police started really cracking down and society started to get all bent out of shape.
You know, as I look at the picture, the gas can is in the car seat but with a seat belt strapping it in and not the car seat's straps. She could have done that if she had the can on the seat! At least then her child would be in his car seat. But chances are that's how she straps her kid in when she actually puts him in the car seat, too. No wonder he unbuckles himself all the time! He's not buckled in properly to begin with!
This lady needs some serious parenting lessons. I understand she may have not had much guidance in that area but there are some things that are pure common sense and putting your child in a car seat is one of them.
